Indian government has ended the concept of PIO for the new travellers. It’s an authentic document that certifies traveling to India without any visa. Emigrants used to need it for traveling across India before January 09, 2015. But an official amendment to the Indian Citizen Act, 1955 ceased its issuance. What are the changes introduced in the Citizen Act, 1955?
These changes made the prospective emigrants worried. They have to think twice before landing in India. Some of them caught up in confusion. They started asking what if the validity of their person of Indian origin card is remaining. It indeed is a serious question. Take an example of an NRI who shifted to UK in 2010. He holds this card whose maturity date is due till 2025 since the government used to issue it for 15 years. Now, the rising of his confusion is obvious after the amendment. Can he travel with the same card again? Is that card enough to travel with the next time? Actually, it’s an official announcement but the card with remaining validity is still acceptable for traveling. It’s the policy that such emigrants can seamlessly travel without any Indian visa if they have this card with lasting validity. What formalities NRIs or foreigners with valid card need to follow? As mentioned above, the traveler must have authentic passport (new & old both) and the card. While entering the Indian Territory, he/she must get this card attested. The competent authority verifies it stating that the card is valid. What’s the alternate for this card? Instead of applying for PIO card online, the prospective travelers can apply for OCI card. As per new regulated policy, the fore card shall be deemed to the latter one. But if the NRI has the fore card issued before the date of amendment, he/she can fly with the valid passport and this card till its maturity date. The government has, however, insisted to exchange the fore card with the latter one as soon as possible.
